Frequently Asked Questions
What does Personal Use mean? Personal Use means that you can display your print for your own personal pleasure. You can share and/or give the print to friends and family, etc.
What is a Commercial Use License? A Commercial Use License allows you to use an image to promote yourself, your horse, your business, etc. There are a couple of different kinds of Commercial Use Licenses with different license fees depending on how you want to use the image. There is a Low Resolution image that can be used on business websites, sent out in e-mails, etc. There is also a High Resolution image that can be used for almost any purpose, including printing of the image.
Why is there an additional charge to use an image for commercial reasons? Advertising and Promotion of a horse, trainer, business, etc., is usually done to get the word out and to generate income. If you use an image for such purposes, that image and it's creator deserve to be paid for helping you to accomplish this.
It's a picture of me or my horse or etc., why can't I do what I want with it? The photographer is always the Owner of an image they have created, no matter the subject of that image. The photographer owns the copyright to the image and nothing is allowed to be done with it unless the photographer gives permission.
A photographer used an image of me on a brochure to advertise his business. Is he allowed to do this without my permission? NO, a photographer cannot use an image of a recognizable person for advertising purposes without signed permission to do so. Most photographers will have their clients sign a Model or Property Release that gives the photographer permission to use the images for such reasons. Check with your photographer and see if you signed such a release. If you did sign a release and still have a problem with the photographer using an image of you for advertising, etc., talk to your photographer about this. I can't imagine a photographer not being willing to work with you on this.
If you have questions please submit them to me via e-mail and I will respond to you personally. In addition, with your permission, I would post them here for other to see and learn from.
